French Noels, among the oldest and most durable of carols, may have derived their name form the Latin word for birthday, "natalis". The first Noels were supposedly an amalgamation of songs sung around Saint Francis' manger scene and the songs of troubadours. They form an unbroken line of words and melody that has continued virtually unchanged to the present.
